KINGSHOUSE HOTEL, GLENCOE

A cosy hotel nestled in the heart of Glencoe

We arrived at our hotel for the night, Kingshouse Hotel. As soon as we entered I knew this was my kind of hotel. It felt very much like a ski lodge with lots of wood, checked soft furnishings and antler decor. We love this style so much it’s what we designed our living room around. We checked in and headed up to our room. The room was modern but cosy with everything you need from a large comfortable bed, bath/shower, complimentary use of robes, complimentary gin and tonics and the most stunning view out of the hotel window of the Glencoe mountains. The hotel is also a good distance from any other facilities so it really feels like an escape to the country. Luckily at Kingshouse there is everything you need to have the perfect stay including a restaurant, a bar and a cafe. The hotel caters for every meal of the day and with the choice of different menus you will be spoilt for choice even if you do stay at this hotel for the full duration of your trip.

We took our time getting ready for the evening, drinking our complimentary gin and enjoying the view from our hotel room window. We even managed to capture a mother duck leading her ducklings safely across the Kingshouse driveway and into the water which was so precious to watch. Once ready we headed down for dinner and chose to eat in the hotel bar. The bar menu is not your traditional pub food and sounds more like what you’d expect to find in the hotel restaurant. Some of my favourites were wild boar pappardelle, langoustines and oysters. James went for the venison cobbler and I had the spatchcock chicken. The food was delicious and we secured a window seat where we could enjoy the view whilst eating and chin wagging over a bottle of red. This did not feel like a hotel bar at all and felt just as though we were out at a restaurant for date night. Top marks all round.

We woke up and it was time for breakfast at Kingshouse. Nursing a slightly sore head after one too many the night before, James and I were ready to demolish everything on offer! Luckily there practically was everything on offer. You can choose from pastries, yogurts, toast, cereals and hot options including haggis and black pudding. We both had a pastry each, some yogurt with a berry compote and then a cooked breakfast. James tried haggis for the first time but he wasn’t a fan. Apparently the flavour is quite strong so overpowered the other breakfast items on the plate. In hindsight this probably wasn’t the best time to try haggis at 9:30am with a slight hangover. You live and learn.

Sadly we only had one night at the Kingshouse and wish we’d stayed longer. This hotel has everything and somehow manages to balance modern with traditional perfectly. Kingshouse is also the perfect stop if you’re embarking on the West Highland Way. You will pass Kingshouse as part of the route so no need to detour. I would 100% recommend this hotel to anyone planning a trip to Glencoe.
